Google allows customized from field on outgoing mail!
The final barrier to my use of gmail for email management was finally conquered with the addition of customizable from: fields in outgoing mail. I can now use gmail to receive and send email for my herebox.org addresses.
As far as incoming sorts, the trick appears to be liberal use of filters to both label and archive incoming mail to get it out of the inbox. Improvement remains to be seen in the labels implementation, but I’m trying to believe the outspoken converts’ defense of the system. New feature requests: multi-level collapsible containers for organizing large numbers of labels (lists, projects, personal, etc); the ability to apply filters to mail already received.
Now to memorize the keyboard shortcuts.
